Funeral – The Funereal EP
Review By: Chad Pab
Review Score: 7.5

Funerals latest EP is a slow march towards the grave with a style that
blends doom, despair, and mourning. The majority of the EP is taken up
by a song called Gamalt Ijós parts 1-3 which makes up about 18 minutes
of the 26 minute EP.
With a flowing progression that combines woeful
clean singing, heavy growls, violins, cellos, bells, as well as
acoustic and electric sections, the song creates a dense atmosphere
that keeps the mood between anger and grief. It’s a journey where
individual moments don’t stand out as much, but it’s the overall
feeling you’re in while listening. That means it doesn’t have any
particular instrument jump out as a “wow cool guitar solo or drum
fill” its more about the mood the song puts you in, and the
instruments playing appropriately to that.

The fourth track on the funeral EP is called Når Kisten Senkes and
it’s a fully acoustic song that has deep low choir-like bass vocals.
It sounds like a graveside hymn, but not necessarily full of sorrow,
but laying something evil to rest.
The album stays in a similar vein to previous Funeral releases, with
its somber feeling, and a mix of dynamic that’s been present since
their early days. Overall, I’d recommend listening to the Funeral EP
on a rainy day or an early misty morning. I can always get into the
mood of the music Funeral puts out, and it now has a place on my
Bloodhymn playlist.
