Together with Destruction, Tankard, Kreator and Sodom, Exumer stands as one of the true pioneers of Germany’s Thrash Metal scene in the 1980s. After a long hiatus, the band reformed in 2008 and has since delivered three full-length albums and several other releases. Now, a few years after Hostile Defiance, the Frankfurt veterans return with Death Mask Messiah — and the Thrash community is buzzing.

The single “Death Mask Messiah” already clocked more than 30,000 streams on Spotify, and it’s easy to see why. Compared to the previous record, this album comes across far more aggressive and makes no compromises. The eleven tracks, recorded between December 2025 and January 2026, are a direct legacy of straight-up Thrash: razor-edged riffs, blistering yet intricate solos, thunderous double-bass, and Mem’s rough, uncompromising vocal delivery carry the spirit of the 1980s while sounding undeniably modern.

Does that mean Death Mask Messiah is only for longtime fans? Absolutely not. Newcomers to Exumer — and even those just dipping their toes into Thrash — will find themselves grabbing an air guitar and grinning through the fury. The songwriting balances old-school aggression with hooks and dynamics that make the album instantly accessible: moments that demand headbanging, others that invite a shouted chorus, and a few passages that reveal surprising melodic nuance beneath the chaos.

Lyrically, Death Mask Messiah digs into darker, uncomfortable corners of contemporary life — manipulation, false prophets, political division, and social unrest. The themes won’t let you off easy, and that’s the point: these issues don’t disappear simply because we wish they would. What music can do is create connection; Exumer use the record to provoke thought and to gather a tribe around shared frustrations and fears. I’ll admit — I had more than a few deep conversations about these lyrics on the ride home after a recent show.
