Gozu’s sixth album finds the Boston heavy rock veterans sharpening their identity into something more emotionally charged and musically adventurous. The band channel emotional upheaval into a deeply soulful and cathartic heavy rock record, balancing crushing riffs with striking honesty and vulnerability.

Forged during a turbulent period for Marc Gaffney, the album feels raw yet uplifting, using the band’s trademark fusion of thick stoner riffs, grunge-laced melodies, classic rock swagger, and rich harmonic experimentation to turn personal struggle into release. Rather than chasing sheer heaviness, Gozu lean into emotional weight.

Beneath the muscular grooves and fuzzy heaviness lies a collection of songs that confront personal struggle, displacement, and recovery. The mood is one of bruised resilience: introspective and melancholic, yet ultimately therapeutic. Gozu VI emerges as both a heavy rock record and an honest emotional purge, an album designed not just to hit hard, but to heal.

Preparing for this one, I was expecting a complex brew, and there are indeed elements of heavy Doom and psychedelia interwoven with pleasant melody and mesmerising vocal work. So here is a deeper dive.

The intro track, “Corinthian Leatherface,” leaps out with a hooky intro riff that demands attention before the fuzzy heaviness kicks in with full force. The track pounds its way along, making it clear that this album means business from the start. A solid way to kick off proceedings.

“Midnight Express” follows with a suitably down-tuned riff that gives way to melancholy vocals. This is a full-on Stoner/Doom-paced number, loaded with introspection and anchored by a genuinely crushing riff. But before “Midnight Express” reaches its destination, the tempo lifts, teeing things up nicely for the more upbeat “Killer Khan.”

Fans of Mastodon will enjoy “Killer Khan.” The opening riff is confusingly similar to the first track, albeit more subdued. Overlaid guitars provide a more spatial feel than the usual wall of riff. Some great supporting vocals reinforce this vibe, producing a powerful number driven along by a thunderous, punchy bass score in most parts.

“Corner Lariat” drifts into moderately psychedelic territory, slowing the pace and pairing it with spellbinding vocals. At nearly seven minutes long, the track meanders along a tightly woven path without ever losing focus. It builds to a crescendo that delivers a satisfying resolution.

Next up, “Banacek” bounces out of the pot and slaps you in the face. There is a short guitar solo in this one, almost the only one on the album. The pronounced bass and drum breakdown at the back end of this track will be a hit with serious Doom fans.

“They Did Know Karate” is the album’s longest track at seven and a half minutes, featuring more excellent vocals and some of the most Doom-laden twin-guitar riffs on the record. It feels tailor-made for the closing stretch of a live set, leaving the audience wanting more.

Yet it is not the final track, as “Gimme the Lute” follows with another airy guitar solo weaving its way beneath Marc Gaffney’s vocals. The combination of towering riffs and commanding vocal melodies gives the track a genuinely epic feel.

“Corvette Summer” rounds things off. I was expecting big things for the finale, and this track does not disappoint. It gallops along with a medley of guitar licks carefully placed over a thunderous riff. Marc’s excellent vocal range adds a dreamy feel at times. This is quite a medley, that “musical stew” that the band themselves refer to. It drifts out quite unexpectedly.

There is a lot of sorrow in this album, but also a lot to celebrate. The experimentation has paid off and you will find a rich tapestry of technique and emotion. Gozu are currently embarking on a long, loud, fuzzed-up co-headlining tour with Restless Spirit, bringing their riffs from coast to coast in the USA. Go check out Gozu, they could be your new top Doom band.
