Format: Single
Review by: Chad Pab

Canadian technical death metal masters Beyond Creation have returned with the new single “Reverence”, offering the first glimpse of what’s to come from their upcoming album expected later this year. Released on February 23, the track delivers everything fans have come to expect from the band while hinting at subtle evolution within their sound.

“Reverence” immediately showcases the defining elements that have made Beyond Creation one of the standout names in modern technical death metal. The band’s unmistakable guitar tone, Hugo Doyon-Karout’s fluid fretless bass work, and the brutal yet precise vocals of guitarist Simon Girard are all present from the start. The song moves through alternating clean and heavy passages, balancing tight chugging riffs with atmospheric moments that create tension before releasing into explosive technical sections.

Clocking in at just over five minutes, the track feels like a miniature journey. The progressive structure allows the band to explore several moods and rhythmic changes without ever losing its forward momentum. It’s the kind of composition that rewards repeat listens, revealing small details and subtle shifts that might initially slip past the listener.

One of the standout aspects of the song is the drumming from Philippe Boucher. His performance is both mechanical and expressive, combining odd-time fills, relentless blast beats, and constant double-kick patterns with crisp cymbal work. There’s even a slight jazz-like feel to some of his transitions, giving the track a sense of musical sophistication that fits perfectly within the technical death metal style.

Toward the end of the song, Beyond Creation introduce an intriguing breakdown-style section. The music pulls back, leaving more space between the riffs before gradually building back into a heavier passage. From there the song transitions into a subtle bass solo that can easily go unnoticed on the first listen. Hidden beneath the outro layers, the solo adds a surprisingly melodic texture that enriches the closing moments of the track.

Lyrically, lines like “through the abyss my body will rise” hint at themes of transformation and transcendence. The song feels like a natural progression from the band’s previous album Algorithm released in 2018. Rather than taking a drastic new direction, Beyond Creation appear to be refining and expanding their established formula, pushing their sound forward while remaining rooted in the intricate technical style they helped popularize.

Ultimately, “Reverence” works as both a powerful standalone track and an enticing preview of the band’s next chapter. If this single is any indication, the upcoming album could see Beyond Creation continuing to evolve while delivering the complex musicianship and intensity fans expect. For now, the track leaves listeners wanting more — which is exactly what a lead single should do.
