Jim Matheos, the mastermind of Tuesday The Sky certainly has made an impact in music. His contribution’s include: Fates Warning, Gordon’s Knot, John Arch, With Memories of Machines, Kings of Mercia, his solo career, OSI, & North Sea Echoes. His creativity & hectic musical life-style come across like an 800 page novel!
With his third release under Tuesday The Sky, he has once again turned the page. His first album, Drift doesn’t remotely sound Iike ‘Fates’ or really any of his previous bands or projects. Some songs have bite while others are introspective. The Blurred Horizon has a more organic sound with some electronic elements more in the foreground. Now, with Indoor Enthusiast, he has something both contemporary yet it still has that Matheos aura. He uses an array of guitar effects & amps to express his vision. Between this & his approach of using minimalistic ideas, there isn’t anyone he sounds like (maybe more importantly nobody relatively sounds like him!).
His approach to melodies is in David Gilmore circles. I promise you this isn’t hyperbole. Matheos’ guitar tone is crisp & warm. There are times it sounds dry yet still has ‘life.’ While Jim has been tampering with electronic programming since the FWX period of Fates Warning, he always has known just the right amount to add to particular tracks. His experience not only as a guitarist but as a programmer is evident. A bonus is that Dennis Leeflang plays drums on three tracks.
While there are no weak tracks, Memento Mori is one of the most unique & strongest tracks he has composed! The combination of beauty & tension somehow sound natural. Some other highlights include Get Lost, Does It Need to Be So Loud? (the nylon string guitar fits perfectly), Zugzwang, and Between Wind and Water.
Don’t hesitate to listen if you remotely like good, melodic, & reflective music.
