He Who Kills isn’t just your normal, everyday album, it’s a fucking statement! One which reads, “We are here to stay and although the band is well over 2 decades old, we’re just getting started! So, get ready fuckers, coz we’re coming to fry your goddamn brain and fuck your earholes! Have yourself a bitchin’ day now. Murderously yours, Monoliyth.”
Right out of the gate on the album He Who Kills, Monoliyth brutalise the Australian soundscape with Rise of the Annihilated. You want heavy? Well, you got it! This song is ferocious, with Mick and Zakk Barr taking the sonic savagery to a new level, higher than Monoliyth themselves have ever been before. Riffs for fucking days, and an opening breakdown that takes a blowtorch to the unsuspecting listener. Drummer Tim Wright keeps the whole arrangement tighter than a nun’s nether regions. And yes, a killer guitar solo!
In fact, the rhythm section as a whole is amazingly laser focused—Jake Mackin on bass, Tim Wright on drums, and Mick and Zakk Barr on guitars bring high-quality crunch to the skull. There are even hints of old school Carcass, brought to life by Andrew Parkinson’s intrinsically talented vocals.
The next two songs, “Paradox” and “Sanity Unravelled,” hit like a volcanic eruption. Great opening sequences lead to the ultimate destruction of any peace and quiet my neighbors hoped for. Fuck them! 10 isn’t loud enough. If there were metalheads nearby, they’d be moshing in the driveway with me. C’est la vie.
These songs channel a disjointed mental state—despair, madness, and that numb scream into the void. The psychotic guitar breakdowns and catastrophic drums amplify that inner unraveling brilliantly.
“Endless Bleeding” and “The Killing Floor” follow, offering two different philosophies on the same thing—death. Some are taken, some exorcise their own demons, but Monoliyth makes sure we all go out to killer riffs and blast beats.
The final three tracks include two pre-released singles: the title track “He Who Kills” and the earlier “Excised Unborn” (check out my review on Metal on Tap). The title track is intricate, feral, and has a guitar solo that kills—literally and metaphorically.
And finally, “To Sever…Is To Savor.” This slow burn opens with intent and foreboding. Within 90 seconds, it becomes a brutal blastbeat apocalypse. Solos, growls, rage, and carnage… a flawless closer.
This album isn’t just music—it’s war. It’s the kind of sonic devastation you’d want blasting while the world ends. Whether they’re playing a festival or a backyard gig, Monoliyth is ready to destroy. Are you ready?
Favorites? “Sanity Unravelled” and “To Sever…Is To Savor” stand out, but honestly, picking one is like picking your favorite weapon in a warzone. Just bring them all.
