Album Review – CRYPTOPSY

Cryptopsy – An Insatiable Violence

Review by: Chad Pab

Review Score: 7

Cryptopsy’s upcoming release An Insatiable Violence lives up to its name, it’s relentless, blistering, and pissed off. It took me several listens to really grasp what was going on, and I’m still not sure I totally get it, but what initially felt like chaos turned out to be a kind of controlled madness. The drums are absolutely relentless and operate at inhuman speed, while the guitar and bass shift between chaotic, hard-to-follow riffs and technical playing. The vocals match the album title perfectly — violent and aggressive, with a solid range from deep gutturals to raspy false chord screams that keep things engaging.

Upon my first listen, the intro riff of “The Nimis Adoration” grabbed me right away. It’s technical but still has this raw, don’t-give-a-shit energy that sets the tone for the record. After that, though, the album kind of melted into a wall of sonic violence — like a machine built for nihilistic self-destruction. That is, until track 6, “Our Great Deception,” when a guitar riff hits with eight pinch harmonics in a row, that moment really stood out to me. The album’s finale is also worth mentioning,  it closes things out with a slower, well-executed break that summarizes the album after all the carnage.

Weirdly enough, I didn’t notice the guitar solos until a couple listens in. The overall sound is such a dense sonic punch that individual moments can get buried — but I think that’s the point. This isn’t an album built around standout riffs or flashy solos; it’s meant to hit you like a self destroying machine over and over.

Cryptopsy’s been around for over 30 years now, and in just 30 minutes, they’ve crammed in as many notes as humanly possible. The tempo doesn’t let up, and that constant speed gives you a reason to come back. You might be hooked by the pinch harmonics or the brutal vocals on the first listen, but on the next, you’ll notice a solo you missed, a sick drum fill, or a quick bass run. I can only imagine how extreme the mosh pit is at a Cryptopsy show.

Overall, I give An Insatiable Violence a 7/10. It’s intense, raging, and a relentless listen that fans of brutal tech death will eat up.
