Sabaton – Legends
Power metal fans unite! Sabaton, the Swedish metal group and chroniclers of historical warfare, known for turning legendary battles and heroic figures into metal anthems, return to the spotlight with a new album destined. Fittingly titled Legends, and set for release on October 17th, 2025, the record explores the lives of influential individuals who shaped the course of history and became enduring symbols in the collective memory of their nations. From the commander who boldly defied the Roman Senate by crossing the Rubicon—Julius Caesar—to the man who reigned over an era—I, Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte—Legends is filled with monumental figures and timeless icons. True to Sabaton’s legacy, the album is a roaring blend of historical storytelling and powerful metal, delivering tracks that break through language barriers with sheer intensity.
The members of Sabaton who contributed to their 2025 album Legends are Joakim Brodén (lead vocals, keyboards), Pär Sundström (bass), Chris Rörland (guitars), Thobbe Englund (guitars), and Hannes Van Dahl (drums). For this album, all five members were involved in the songwriting process.
The cover art captures the spirit of the album with dramatic imagery: Hannibal astride his war elephant, Caesar crowned with a shining laurel, Napoleon poised atop his white steed, and Joan of Arc, or Jeanne d’Arc, depicted with radiant golden hair flowing like fire. The music itself charges forward with Sabaton’s signature fast-paced riffs, anthemic vocals that demand to be sung along with, and cinematic production that extends into their visual presentations. Like a detailed mural, the artwork tells a story before a single note is heard—offering a glimpse into the epic journey waiting within the tracks.
The album opens up with “Templars,” a track that begins with ethereal, chant-like vocals before the guitars explode. It chronicles the rise and fall of the Knights Of Templar with dramatic flair. Drummer Hannes Van Dahl lays down a heartbeat-like rhythm that mirrors the march of crusaders into battle. The interplay between Pär Sundström’s basslines and Chris Rörland’s guitar riffs vividly evokes the chaos of medieval warfare, while frontman Joakim Brodén brings weight to the tragic betrayal with his commanding vocal delivery, highlighting lines like “false accusations” and “assassinations” with palpable intensity. I loved the official video of this track too!
Next up is “Hordes of Khan,” a tribute to the fearsome Genghis Khan and his sweeping empire. The track builds rapidly, hitting like a sudden cavalry charge. Brodén’s storytelling prowess shines as he narrates the Mongol ruler’s ruthless campaigns, accompanied by a brooding and intense choral backdrop that captures the relentlessness of Khan’s conquest.
“A Tiger Among Dragons” offers a striking blend of Eastern musical motifs and Sabaton’s signature metal style. Focused on the legendary Chinese general Lü Bu, the track merges traditional Chinese instrument-inspired melodies with thunderous instrumentation, echoing Lü Bu’s unstoppable presence on the battlefield during the chaotic Three Kingdoms era.
Of course, no album themed around legends would be complete without Julius Caesar. “Crossing the Rubicon” is a collaboration with American rock band Nothing More, and it channels the gravity of Caesar’s pivotal decision that sparked the fall of the Roman Republic. The music marches with military precision, as if a Roman legion is advancing with each beat.
In “I, Emperor,” Sabaton captures the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte. The steady pulse of the drums mirrors the relentless pace of his campaigns, while the sweeping strings and lyrics guide listeners through his ascent to power, his dramatic return, and eventual downfall. The haunting guitar solo that closes the track hints at the looming shadow of Waterloo.
“Maid of Steel” explodes with energy, a fitting tribute to the indomitable spirit of Jeanne d’Arc. The track mirrors her meteoric rise from peasant girl to divine warrior and national heroine. The clever lyrical play on her name adds a cheeky layer to an otherwise empowering anthem that celebrates her bravery and sacrifice.
Dark and brooding, “Impaler” recounts the chilling legacy of Vlad III, better known as Vlad the Impaler. True to its subject, the song moves at a slow and ominous pace, capturing the terror he wielded against the Ottoman Empire. With deliberate rhythm and a menacing tone, it paints a grim portrait of his brutal defense of Wallachia.
“Lightning at the Gates” is a powerhouse track dedicated to Hannibal’s legendary crossing of the Alps. The beat marches forward like his army trudging through snow-capped peaks, evoking the awe of one of history’s most daring military maneuvers. The song serves as both a tribute and a rallying cry, elevating Hannibal’s story to mythic proportions.
While the rest of the album soars, “The Duelist” slightly falters in execution. Though the tempo is intense and the subject matter—Miyamoto Musashi, Japan’s most famous swordsman—is compelling, the incorporation of excerpts from The Book of Five Rings feels jarring and disrupts the song’s overall rhythm. Nevertheless, Musashi’s legendary status is well-reflected in the epic scale of the composition.
“The Cycle of Songs” turns its gaze to ancient Egypt and Pharaoh Senusret III. The track fuses desert-inspired melodies with Sabaton’s heavy style, creating a rich sonic landscape. The lyrics mirror the pharaoh’s divine mission, his campaigns in Nubia, and his elevation of Egypt’s glory. The song also follows the mythic journey of Ra, tying Senusret’s rule to celestial order.
As the final track, “Till Seger” (“To Victory”) is performed entirely in Swedish and is a triumphant closer. Dedicated to Gustavus Adolphus, it carries the energetic spirit of Carolus Rex and embodies the unyielding determination of the Swedish people as they followed their king into battle. Despite the language barrier, the song’s infectious power speaks universally through rhythm and melody.
With Legends, Sabaton once again proves their unmatched ability to breathe new life into the past through the raw force of heavy metal. Fans around the world can only wait eagerly for the moment these epic tales are brought to life on stage. There is no better way to tell a story other than with power metal.
